If you like to hike, than you’ll love Sunriver and Central Oregon. With thousands of hiking trails to surprise spots with waterfalls, sparkling mountain lakes, wildflower fields, and magnificent views, hiking is one of the ways to really get out, up close and personal with nature and our gorgeous Central Oregon surroundings.
The Cascade Lakes highway loop which starts right outside of Sunriver and ends in Bend, literally has hundreds of lakes and even more hiking trails. There are leisurely hikes to private picnic areas or you can go for a serious multi-day backpacking trip.
The Newberry Volcanic Monument located only ten miles south of Sunriver has access to hundreds of hikes, camping spots, creeks and rivers, and is home to acres and acres of glass…black Obsidian rock fields. This is where the Paulina Plunge takes place which combines a downhill mountain bike ride, hiking, and a plunge into waterfalls and natural rock water slides.
The Deschutes River trail, which you can access from the north end of Sunriver, takes you along the Deschutes River to Benham, Dillon, and Lava Island Falls. Benham Falls is roughly about 3 ½ miles from Sunriver.
If you would like more information on day hikes or backpacking excursions, please ask for a list at our front desk, or refer to your in-home guest handbook. Also, we have a book for sale at our front desk called “Bend, Overall” by Scott Cook. It is chock full of adventures and hikes off the beaten path. We were even surprised to read of some we didn’t know existed!
